Maxarya recumbents from Canada

Ray 1 Rear Suspension

Ray 1X Dual Suspension

The Ray-1 is the least expensive quality CLWB with rear suspension on the market. It is les expensive than the Ray-1X but also lighter. This because on the Ray 1 you are not paying for (or carrying) front suspension, which is not needed on a CLWB or LWB in my opinion.

The Maxarya handlebars may be a bit far from the seat for a tall rider, especially if you like more seat recline. The Maxarya uses two chains instead of one long one like most recumbents. The rear chain that shifts the gears is short, like on a traditional diamond frame bike. The front derailleur rubs is some gears, like some diamond frame bikes with indexed front shifting. This can be a bit annoying but is not a big issue.

SEAT:
The seat may be the most important part of a recumbent. The Maxarya has a pretty comfy seat with foam base and mesh back. It has good lumbar support and is adjustable for riders form about 5’4” to 6’ 2”. It has some recline adjustment too.

FRAME:
The Maxarya frame is TIG welding from their custom extruded seamless AL7005 tubes. The cable paths are precise and routed partially internal for more protection and elegance.
The frame’s triangulation keeps it strong, lightweight and stylish.

REAR WHEEL:
LWB and CLWB recumbents have different weight distribution than regular bikes. Their rear wheel carries more weight than front wheel, and need to be stronger. It needs stiffer rim, stronger brake and more stable swing arm if it is suspended (with suspension).

The mechanical disc brakes on the Ray-1 are a bit less powerful when they are dry than the V-brakes found on most recumbents. The disks are more powerful than V-brakes when they get wet because wetness does not affect the disks as much as t V brakes.

SUSPENSION:
Maxarya created a pogo-free suspension system is achieved through computer simulation and road tests. The rear bottom bracket joint guarantees a smooth and pleasant ride. The Ray-1X comes with the fine Cane Creek AD-5 shock which is air adjustable. The Ray-1 is equipped with adjustable coil and gas filled high quality DNM shock. The mid-drive is a bit more complex than needed but works well.

TRANSMISSION:
Both models are equipped with Sram twist shifters.

The Ray-1 has 24 speed SRAM ESP-7.0 twist shifters to control its 24 speeds. The gears are shifted by a front and rear derailleur like most recumbents.

The Ray-1X comes with 27-speed right-handed shifter, which allows you to change all gears with one hand. This is great for riders with limited use of their left hand. Three of the 27 gears are in the rear hub and can be shifted even when you are stopped.

STEM AND HANDLEBAR:
The Maxarya stem is made from double butted AL7005 for stability and strength. Their bikes have minimum tiller effect.

It adjusts up and down and comes with braze-on water bottle holder in front of you. It is also compatible with our optional extension bar, which give 2" more reach.

At 37 lb (on our Scale) the Ray 1-X is the lightest full suspension CLWB I know of.

Maxarya Ray 1-X Specifications

Most riders find the Maxarya Ray 1-X is easy to get sued to. A CLWB OSS bike with full suspension, it is stable, easy to maneuver, upright and comfy. It reminds me of a BikeE RX with better handling and much better suspension. Its natural, relaxing position puts you in a heads up stance where you can see traffic very well. Not a race bike but a great comfort recumbent. At 37 lb (on our Scale) the Ray 1-X is the lightest full suspension CLWB I know of.

A 20” front wheel is an available option on the Ray-1X. A Ray 1-X ordered with this option will cost the same and not have front suspension.

Ray 1-X Features:
Sram DualDrive hub giving 27 speeds,
Dual Mechanical disc brake DP-1F
Aprebic 16" suspension, alloy, adjustable
Cane Creek AD-5 air rear shock
